This high-quality Victron Energy 32A galvanic isolator helps prevent electrolytic corrosion by blocking low-voltage DC currents that can enter your boat through the shore power earth connection. These unwanted currents can cause corrosion to underwater metal components such as the hull, propeller and propeller shaft.
The galvanic isolator features two diodes connected in an anti-parallel configuration, allowing current to flow in both directions only when the voltage exceeds a set threshold. The combined forward voltage of the diodes is approximately 1.4V DC, preventing low-voltage galvanic currents from passing through the earth connection.
The isolator is installed directly behind the boat's 230V AC shore power connection. Under normal conditions, the voltage required to activate the diodes is higher than the potential difference between underwater metals, effectively preventing galvanic currents from flowing through the shore power earth.
In the event of an electrical fault resulting in a higher AC error voltage, the diodes allow current to pass through the earth connection, enabling the boat's residual-current device (RCD) to detect the fault and disconnect the circuit. This provides effective galvanic corrosion protection without compromising the safety of the AC shore power system.
